Why I love it:A 15 year old girl falling in love with a 35 year old man.It's such a complex issue, and if handled the wrong way would come out horrible. Though he has affections towards her, the age difference between them dithers him and he tries to direct her love towards his young employee Baby (Rahman). Without knowing this, Sherly finds herself falling in love with the much older Roy, who is her best friend's uncle. On his death, the sponsorship is continued by his son Roy (Mammootty), who is a rich businessman.
Story:Sherly (Shobhana) is an orphan who is sponsored by an old man. All in all a flawless film that all should watch.
Sathyan's acting, although very arrogant and raw most of the time is exemplary to say the least. And of course Kottarakkara, who played Sheela's greedy father. Superb and faultless acting by Sathyan, Sheela and Madhu. If you have eagle eye for film direction, you will not be disappointed. The characters are shot close-up whenever necessary, as in a play and I liked this very much, a very Bergman/Ray technique. In technicolor ( BTW the very first Malayalam colour film ), the film quality is superb. It is to perpetuate this myth that Thakazhi wrote this beautiful novel. The cinematography of Chemmeen is outstanding, including shots of the sea front, it clearly gives the audience with a 3D imagery of the chosen fishing community area. If the married fisherwoman was infidel when her husband was in the sea, the Sea Goddess ('Kadalamma' literally means Mother Sea)the Goddess wouls consume him. The theme of the novel is a myth among the fishermen communities along the coastal Kerala State in the Southern India. Why I love it: "Chemmeen", renowned Malayalam novel by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai has been translated into more than thirty languages.
So the story is also an embodiment of moral standards. Its tells the engraved nature of superstition in the Hindu religion and culture, for example, the firm belief that if you do wrong, 'Kadalamma (mother of the sea)' will most definitely be cross with you, ie she will take your precious item away as punishment. It tells how people can change with greed and jealousies. Behind this localised story of true love, Chemmeen also tells the global story of a fishing locality. It reaffirms the required commitment to relationships, it displays the true growing nature of love in an arranged marriage, but it also shows how deep, passionate-love can both save and destroy ordinary humans. It examines the power of universal love and proves that love has no religious, cultural or geographical boundaries. It's an investigation into tri-partite relationships. It is a tragic love story, comparable to Romeo and Juliet. Story: This is quite a hard core story to summarise.
